California Tiki - A Journey Through History

Presented by Scott Schell 'Dustycajun'

California has always been the hot bed for the Tiki movement. From its inception, the Tiki phenomenon started in California and spread widely across the US. With an emphasis on history and graphical imagery, this action-packed seminar will explore the early 1940’s roots of the Tiki bar, the vast expansion in the 1960’s, and the rebirth we all enjoy today.

With initial inspiration from Sven Kirsten's original "Book of Tiki," Scott Schell, aka Dustycajun, has been an enthusiastic Tiki ephemera collector and researcher for over 25 years. Highlights from Scott's collection have been featured in many Tiki book projects and he contributed several artifacts that were displayed at the "Tiki Pop" exhibit at Quai Branly Museum, Paris.

Psychedelia Meets The Parents

Psychedelia Meets The Parents

Presented by Andrew Sandoval

The year 1968 marked the moment psychedelic counterculture permeated mainstream pop culture. The evidence was everywhere: instrumentalist Vinnie Bell dropped Pop Goes The Electric Sitar, and even “Sleepwalk” steel guitarists Santo & Johnny cut a version of “She’s a Rainbow.” Meanwhile, cinema-goers watched films like Skidoo, I Love You Alice B. Toklas and The President’s Analyst that poked fun at the hippie lifestyle. Were the older generation cynically cashing in or suffering from a 1960s case of FOMO? Renowned historian Andrew Sandoval untangles this cultural crossover in an immersive audiovisual presentation.

Andrew Sandoval is an author, DJ and Grammy-nominated producer. He has penned books on The Kinks, The Monkees and The Bee Gees and for 20-years hosted a weekly radio program, Come to the Sunshine (on WFMU’s Rock ‘N Soul radio). Since 1990, Sandoval has been the compiler and producer of reissue records, including works by The Everly Brothers, Van Morrison, The Beach Boys, Elvis Costello, Big Star, The Zombies and various artist compilations like Rhino’s Where The Action Is: Los Angeles Nuggets 1965-1968.

12th Annual Tiki Oasis Book Club

Presented by Karen Finlay

It’s the 12th anniversary of The Tiki Oasis Book Club! This year we will read Eve's Hollywood by Eve Babitz.

Review on Good Reads “Journalist, party girl, bookworm, artist, muse: by the time she’d hit thirty, Eve Babitz had played all of these roles. Eve’s Hollywood is an album of  vivid snapshots of Southern California’s haute bohemians, of outrageously beautiful high-school ingenues and enviably tattooed Chicanas, of rock stars sleeping it off at the Chateau Marmont. And though Babitz’s prose might appear careening, she’s in control as she takes us on a ride through an LA of perpetual delight, from a joint serving the perfect taquito, to the corner of La Brea and Sunset where we make eye contact with a roller-skating hooker, to the Watts Towers. This “daughter of the wasteland” is here to show us that her city is no wasteland at all but a glowing landscape of swaying fruit trees and blooming bougainvillea, buffeted by earthquakes and the Santa Ana winds—and every bit as seductive as she is.”

Hostess with the mostest books, Karen Finlay, is the founder of The Mid-Century Supper Club Potluck, and owner of Alibi Bookshop in Vallejo, CA. When she’s not reading, she’s crafting cute felt brooches - something she never thought she would do! But books, book clubs, and Tiki Oasis are her very favorite things, and combining them for the past 12 years has been a dream come true.
